Team 24 Update: 11/9/15

  • Reading: Our new literacy unit will introduce students to an ancient civilization whose contributions can be seen in many areas of our lives today. Students will learn about the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greeks, the city-states of Sparta and Athens, and the philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They will learn about the first Olympic Games held in honor of Zeus, the significance of the battles of Marathon and Thermopylae, and the conquests of Alexander the Great. Students will also learn about the Greek contribution of democracy and how those ideas are used today in many governments, including our own.
  • Writing: Students are continuing to build their “Writing Muscles” and the stamina it takes to write.  They are also revising their writing to make it stronger with a Narrative Writing Rubric-I will share this rubric with families at conferences.
  • Math: We are reviewing and taking our Unit 1 Test this week! Scores will be shared at conferences. We will begin our new Unit 2: Addition within 200 and look at patterns involving place value at the end of the week.
  • Science: After our awesome field trip to the farm, we now have our own compost bin in our class full of worms!  We will investigate what will happen when we add water to soil and what will happen when you streak/smear soil on paper.  Students are using KLEWS to complete these investigations: K-what we KNOW, L-LEARNED/ “Claim”, E-EVIDENCE, W-what we WONDER, and S-SCIENTIFIC Vocabulary we use.
  • Technology: Studentveterans day5s created a special Veteran’s Project this week using Word and a great website, Wordle. Our work is displayed in our hallway and you can also see it here: Important Words of Veteran’s Day 2015  We also sent off copies to local veterans to thank them.  After all, our CV character trait this month is THANKFULNESS!

Reminders:

  • Check out our Room 24 Calendar for current events!
  • No School Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day. This also means it is a FULL day Friday this week.

Have a great week!

🙂 Mrs. F.
